Place a handful of dried rose petals in a mason jar, cover with boiling water, seal, and let set overnight. Note that dried rose petals are available in many health food stores (as is vegetable glycerin), or online from herbal supply stores. After the rose petal infusion has set overnight, strain. Combine the ingredients in a pretty jar, and shake to blend. Note that you will extend the shelf life if you add 1/2 a teaspoon of grapefruit seed extract (available in health food stores). The antiseptic quality of essential oils will also act as a preservative.

So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The Godlike qualities planted in us at birth, grow amid the thorns of our faults.  Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects.  We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us.  We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies.  We
never realize our potential.

Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns of another, and find the rose within them.

This is one of the characteristic of love... to look at a person, know their true faults and accepting that person into your life... all the while recognizing the nobility in their soul. Help others to realize they can overcome their faults. If we show them the "rose" within themselves, they will conquer their thorns.  Only then will they blossom many times over.

The element associated with the rose is Water, so it is particularly friendly to the astrological signs of Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Both Mercury and Venus rule this flower. A bath in rose petals or rose water (which is distilled from the buds) is said to attract love to the bathing beauty. An ancient custom is to sprinkle the bed of newly weds with rose petals to sweeten the initial carnal relations. In ancient alchemical formulas the red rose is used as a masculine principle and the rose represents the feminine or receptive principle. The combination of the two (perhaps growing the two bushes intertwined in the garden) represents harmony and unity.

Rose oil, which is extracted through a rather expensive process from the petals of the flower, is also prominent in both love and healing rituals. When applied the temples the oil is said to cure a headache. When applied to the thighs or breasts it is supposed to attract a suitor. As an essential oil, the rose's essence is thought to relieve depression, PMS and postnatal depression. It is also said to cure frigidity and impotence. Bach's Herbal Remedies makes a distillation of the Wild Rose. Taking drops of this under your tongue is thought to help the patient free themselves from a rut or feelings of hopelessness and being trapped by fate. Rose water is used in cooking spells and added to curries and cake mixes to infuse the dish with good spirits and love attracting qualities. The water is also splashed on the skin (but not around the eyes) to give you a complexion as dewy as the flower.

The rose historically also symbolizes the female genitalia and is associated with Cupid, Eros, Adonis, Aphrodite, Isis, Hathor, and Demeter. Rose water and rose petals are often used in magical rituals to honor these gods and goddesses.

Although red roses are traditionally seen as symbols of lust, love and the flower also has a long association with such qualities as purity, compassion and divine perfection. The white rose in particular has an affinity with the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit.

The color of the rose is also significant. Red roses symbolize love, sex and passion. Pink roses suggest friendship, joy, gratitude and fun. Yellow roses can symbolize enthusiasm, but according to some folklore, the yellow rose can symbolize deception or "the perfect crime." Orange roses signify enthusiasm, passion and a lust for life. White roses are symbolic of significant landmarks in life (such as death, birth and marriage), unconditional love, purity and innocence.

The flower is not the only part of the rose that is used in divination and magic. To discover their romantic future, women used to take pluck three green rose leaves and name one after each of their suitors. The one that stayed green the longest was her soulmate. Rose hips can be strung like beads on a thread and worn as a necklace to attract love. Drinking rose-hip tea is thought to increase one's powers of prophecy.

Ironically, for a flower that is often given as a gift, the most powerful roses are said to be those that have been stolen from another person's garden.

It is said that one of Cleopatra's gifts to Mark Anthony was a bathing room full of scented rose petals, strewn across the floor to a depth of three feet! Personally I'm not quite that extravagant or possess such a large rose garden to produce so many fresh petals but I do appreciate the sentiment.

Christmas in the northern hemisphere means we look out over our rose beds of bare canes and some of us miss the summer blooms, the vibrant colors and the delicate scents.

Christmas gifts for rose lovers can help maintain the sentiment and bring joy to an otherwise heavy heart. To help you with your gift giving plans, here are a variety of gift ideas for the rose lovers on your 'nice' list.

Use Your Own Roses

If you have had the foresight to save and dry some of your own roses, why not use them to create a summer memory? A dry rose bud centerpiece or small door wreath both look nice, or how about using a variety of dried petals and a cinnamon stick to make up a potpourri which can easily be presented in a small wooden box topped with a rose bud.

Use Your Rose Hips

These wonderful little berries can be the source of many an unusual and welcomed gift. Boiled they can become a rose hip tea, rich in Vitamin C or added to your door wreath of dried rose buds they complete the Christmas color theme. My Aunt has the best idea however, she uses them to make rose-hip jelly. Now wouldn't a pot of that go down well at Christmas time?

Get Crafty with Petals

Dried rose petals, your own or purchased, can be used in paper-making, candle-making and soap -making. They bring color and some scent to all these crafts and their value can easily be enhanced by adding a card with dried and pressed rose buds. Gifts like these become even more poignant if the card noted that the petals being used had been cultivated in your own rose bed!

Crystal and Glass

Okay, so your not into crafts and you forgot to collect and dry your own roses this year. No Problem. What about a single rose made in crystal or a small tiffany style lamp with a rose design motif or, my favorite, a crystal rose shaped pendant? There are some stunning designs available that incorporate rose shapes and colors and these would be perfect for your rose loving friends.

Books and Stuff

Actually I really like to receive a yearly calendar full of rose photographs at this time of year. Books such as '100 English Roses for the American Garden' or any of the Peter Beales books make good choices. How about 'A celebration of Roses - An Illustrated Anthology of Verse and Prose' if you prefer a more lyrical outlook, or 'And Roses for the Table - A Garden of Recipes' for the budding chef on your list. Don't forget the notepaper and envelopes with printed rose buds or the yearly subscription to the 'American Rose Society'. Then there is another favorite of mine, a yearly subscription to my favorite magazine 'The Rose'.

Dabble in Oils

Not painting so much, although a nice framed picture of your favorite bloom would be a great idea, but rose oils. It's worth considering for it embraces both ends of the spending spectrum. Rosewater is both useful, fine scented and rather inexpensive, while rose attar (true rose oil!) is both exotic and costly. Who wouldn't like to receive even a small gift in this category?

Small Tools for the Spring

How nice to be reminded that spring will be around again and you will have a new tool to help you produce those superb blooms. My most used small tool is a water probe which is both inexpensive and invaluable. How about small pruners or a sharpening kit for old pruners? The ultimate gift in this category however is a pair of rose gardening gloves, the ones that are thorn proof and have long sleeves, covering the lower arms from scratches. These would really bring a smile to your rose lover friend.

When I was a child I always envied our relatives in Australia at Christmas time, because they got to spend Christmas at the beach, but now I envy them because they have a full rose garden of blooms at Christmas while I, living in the Northern Hemisphere, stare out at bare rose canes. I know the spring is coming so I go hunting for Christmas gifts for my rose loving friends and somehow this bridges the winter gap. Hopefully these ideas can help you with your gifts for your rose loving friends.

Oh, and don't forget, reminding them to get a tetanus shot every ten years is probably the most useful of all gifts, but of course it is a little difficult to wrap!

Many types of flowers and especially roses have a romantic history, with their sweet scent, silky soft textures and joyful appearance.

Roses can symbolize a lot of emotions, and also produce or renew those that have faded from awareness to lift a person outlook; it is in nature's bounty for all of us to see the natural beauty in existence.

You wouldn't believe how many times that I've sold a dozen roses to a customer with stars in their eyes. It always seems like buying a dozen roses represent only times when you are the most in love. A dozen roses is a big and bold declaration. It can even be named a proclamation. I know that the times I was given a dozen roses in my life were few and dear.

A customer came in my flower shop last month looking for a dozen roses. He seemed so excited and anxious to tell me why he was buying a dozen roses.

The customer wanted to tell me that he was buying his spouse a dozen roses because they had just receive the news that they were pregnant with their first child. He was so excited that he was about to dance. We had the dozen roses sent to their house and I was the lucky one that got to deliver the flowers. They live in a really nice house in an affluent quarter. They had flowers in the courtyard and it looked nice.

The woman looked a little pale when she answered the door to get the dozen roses. She explained to me that she was experiencing morning sickness. She really looked a lot better after the dozen roses were given to her.

The busiest time of year around my shop is mother's day. We sell a lot of vases containing a dozen roses to men that want to honor their wives.

My dad has always bought a dozen roses for my mom on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, her birthday and their wedding anniversary. He always kept up the purchasing of four dozen roses each year for as long as I remember. As soon as I find a man who will offer me a dozen roses four times a year like my father does for my mother I will know I've found the right guy for me. I'm still waiting quietly.

The list is endless on how to use rose petals, however, when we consider the use of roses in special events and celebrations one particular event comes to my mind and that would be weddings. I guess that is especially because I was just married less than a month ago! Still, nowhere has the rose been used to such a large degree than in weddings. The us of rose petals has now replaced many of the normal traditions of the typical US wedding. For example, in many cases the rice that was once thrown at the end as the happy new couple was leaving to go on the honeymoon, has now been replaced by rose petals. We commonly see rose petals being used by flower girls too, and imitation petals are a hot item as well.

Aromatherapy, also known as personal therapy is another area using rose petals that is not just an idea from the hip 1960s. It gained widespread popularity as aromatherapy in the 1980s, and has grown larger and more popular ever since. Relaxing therapy with rose scents are used in candles, lotions, bath oils and perfume too. Professional therapists in spas that offer massage therapy are now requested very often to rub the customer with the relaxing scent of the rose petal. Our research has shown us that for use in home, the rose is the top rated smell that is purchased for use in air fresheners, candles, or for any other type of home freshener device.

Another unique and not commonly thought of use for rose petals is in cooking. These days the number of people that are using the rose petal in cooking is increasing constantly. Native Americans have long used dried rose petals in their cooking for its unique flavor and aroma. Now we are learning to return to their enlightened way of cooking too. From rose hips, which are the dried seeds of roses, a highly flavored tea is a good way to end or begin a day. If you have ever read the ingredients in many formulations for Vitamin C you will see rose hips listed as they are a good source. There many types of rose petals that can be added to foods that will increase the flavor too. There are a lot of different dishes that can be created with the rose petal scent.
