Flowery Facts - True Rose

Aside from looking beautiful which contributes to overall visual pleasure and feeling of wellbeing, roses have a genuine practical use in promoting good health. Rose oil and rose water are in fact derived from the flowers and rose hips also have many beneficial properties. Products made of that are going to be obviously very different from lavender products.

It is often written that the rose was probably the very first flower from which scented oil and water were distilled; possibly in the 10th Century Persia. Even today, many rose oils are still produced in that part of the world for their health effect.

The use of the rose is hugely varied across the world and across the centuries. It has a long history in its use in traditional healing remedies, especially in the area of skincare and has antiseptic and mild astringent properties. It can be used on all skin types, whether the skin is greasy, dry or anything else, but it is especially valuable for dry, sensitive or ageing skins.

Apparently, according to a seventieth century English physician called mister Culpeper, rose scent can strengthen the heart. He suggests, physically, but it can certainly evoke the senses spiritually and emotionally.

It takes about sixty thousand roses to produce just 1 ounce of oil making Rose fragrances some of the most expensive in the world.

Even in very ancient ages, the rose had its importance.
In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, is said to have created the rose which arose from her tears and the blood of her lover Adonis. The Romans, turning Aphrodite into their goddess Venus, also adopted the rose and it became the symbol of love and beauty. Cupid, offered a rose to the God of Silence as a bribe, when trying to keep Venus's passionate escapades quiet, thus making the flower into a symbol for secrecy.
Roman dining room ceilings were decorated with roses, reminding guests to keep secret what had been said during dinner. 'Sub rosa' - 'Under the rose' to this day means 'confidentially'.

In England, the rose became truly 'royal' during the 15th century War of the Roses, with each of the Houses adopting their own rose. The winner of this war, Tudor Henry VII, merged his Lancastrian rose with the red rose of his York bride and thus created the Tudor Rose, the true English Rose. You can even find nowadays products being called by this name in an effort to make the beauty product more appealing to English consumers.
