Rose hip seed oil has proven to be useful in the alleviation of dermal ailments, such as photoaging (dermatohelisosis). These ailments are more likely to develop in people residing in zones of warm climates. UV exposure can create several changes in skin that can sometimes be severe. The seriousness of dermatoheliosis can range from small wrinkles to keratosis and also could lead to the maldistribution of melanin.
To test the healing benefits of rose hip seed oil, volunteers were selected among people who usually spend three months of summer in seaside resorts or who go to the beach every day. In the year 1988, a group of twenty women between the ages of 25 and 35 were tested, controlled and assessed. Tan skin, brown spots, and wrinkles were the most commonly observes effects of sun exposure. During four months of Autumn in 1988 (May to August, 1988) the women applied rose hip oil to the face.
Every eight days, reports were given on the effects the treatments were having on the skin. As early as the third week, significant changes were observed. Observations show that by the end of the fourth month, almost all sun induced problems had been reduced, for example lightened age spots and diminished wrinkles. Their skin appeared smooth and fresh without signs of prior age spots.
Treatment of Surgical Scars
This study was done with scars of similar types. The sample group consisted of ten women between 45 and 68 years old who had undergone unilateral or bilateral mastectomy.
The same day the surgical stitches were removed, application of rose hip seed started. After cleansing the area using tepid water and soap and gently drying it, a soft massage was used to apply the soil. Oil was applied twice daily for three months to result in the following reduction in scar visibility, smooth appearance and improvement in color and skin elasticity.
Treatment specialists observed a significant improvement in skin condition after observing patients for four months on this skin care routine. This treatment greatly facilitated prosthetic implantation and plastic surgery as compared to patients who had not undergone rose hip oil treatment.
These sample studies as well as indigenous accounts of rose hip oil treatments have uncovered its benefits as a natural skin treatment. Not only has it been used for surgery scars, but also for stretch marks, acne scars, and other skin blemishes.
Testing is still being done in Chile by surgeon and radiotherapist, Dr. Hans Harbst. Dr. Harbst is renowned in the areas of radiology, radio-oncology, and nuclear medicine at the Nuclear Research Center of the University of Heidelberg, Germany and also holds the position as head of the Department of Radiology of the Chilean Air Force Hospital in Santiago.
